Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of many natural horsemanship techniques and practitioners; Buck Brannaman would be one of my all time hero’s.

But when I work with my horses I also don’t delude myself into thinking that there is anything natural about the horse/human relationship.

Because for me this is the rub:

Horses as a species don’t form inter-species bonds…

That’s it…

This horse/human or dog/human or cat/human thing – not actually normal for the horse/dog/cat…

So when someone feeds you some crap about you needing to ‘act like the alpha dog or leader mare’, don’t believe them. Do you really truly think (no mater how well you try and mimic a dog or horse), your dog or horse actually looks at you and thinks ‘that is another dog/horse!!!’?

Now I also drank that Kool-aid once – so I totally understand why you might have also…

But when you think about it logically. We don’t have flexible ears, we don’t have a tail, we are tall, narrow and walk on two limbs and we use complex vocalisation as our primary method of communication.

We are not a dog. We are not a horse. So please don’t try and be a dog or a horse.

So be a human, be a smart human that acknowledges that your are a human and not a dog or a horse. Be a smart human that learns everything there is to learn about the ethology of their horse or dog so that you understand how you CAN jump across the species divide, form healthy bonds and learn how to form a clear communication system.

Because it is possible… but lets be honest about who and what we are and are not
